On September 12 and 13, 1998, elections for the presidency and members of the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the president, vice-president, and members of the National Assembly of Republika Srpska, and members of the House of Representatives of the Parliament of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina were held. At the request of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Japan dispatched 5 national government officials as election observers, as well as 25 polling station supervisors - 3 national government officials, 5 local government officials, and 17 individuals from the private sector. |

Election Observers

Each of the Japanese election observers were paired with an observer from another country, generally monitoring more than 10 polling stations a day to ensure that free and fair elections were held. |

Polling Station Supervisors
|
All 25 polling station supervisors were stationed in Sarajevo Canton. They monitored whether the elections were being conducted in accordance with the election rules and requested the heads of polling station committees to make improvements, if necessary. Some supervisors checked election supplies, such as ballot papers, ballot-counting forms, and voter lists, as well as distribution and storage, at the collection center for election materials. |

Liaison and Coordination Personnel

Four liaison and coordination personnel from the concerned agencies ,i.e., Prime Minister's Office (now Cabinet Office) and Ministry of Foreign Affairs were sent to Sarajevo Canton to facilitate communications and coordination between the Japanese election personnel and relevant organizations. These personnel ensured smooth and effective implementations of assigned duties. |
