International Peace Cooperation Assignment in the Golan Heights

Since February 1996, Japan has been dispatching Self-Defense Force staff/units to the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) deployed in the critical Golan Heights area of southwestern Syria, and providing logistics support such as assisting headquarters operations and providing transportation for UNDOF.
Staff Officers

SDF staff officers are assigned to UNDOF headquarters located in Camp Faouar on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights, and are engaging in UNDOF public relations and logistic operations such as planning and coordinating transportation. They are actively conducting their assignments in cooperation with staff dispatched from other countries. Japan's SDF staff officers are rotated about once a year. The fifteenth rotation of staff officers have been stationed in this region since February 2010. The number of Japan's SDF staff officers dispatched to the UNDOF Headquarters had increased from 2 to 3 members since the fourteenth staff rotation. |
Transport Units

The SDF transport units consists of 43 personnel and has their main headquarters at Camp Ziouani on the Israeli side of the Golan Heights. The unit provides logistic support for UNDOF activities, including road repair as well as transportation and storage of food and other supplies. Since the regional situation in UNDOF's deploymnet area is calm, Japan's SDF staff is able to steadily conduct their assignments. Also,they are living in good health despite harsh conditions isolated from the general public. UNDOF is playing a key role in supporting ongoing peace negotiations, whose main focus is the settlement of issyes in the Golan Heights located between Israel and Syria. Japan's SDF staff is fully engages in supporting UNDOF, and have been steadily carrying out their duties since this assignment began. As a result, they are making a significant contribution to the Golan Heights disengagement observation. New transport units are brought in approximately every six months. Since February 2010, the 29th transport unit has been deployed to the UNDOF. |

Liaison and Coordination Personnel

Liaison and coordination personnel forwarded from the Cabinet Office are dispatched to Israel and Syria. Their job is to provide liaison and coordination between Japanese staff officers and units and relevant organizations in these countries for smooth and effective performance of duties. |
Air Self-Defense Force Support
|
Since May 1996, the Air Self-Defense Force has provided a U-4 or a C-130H transport plane approximately every six months to airlift food and other supplies from Japan to support transport units and staff officers in the Golan Heights. |
