Mr. Ban Ki-moon, the UN Secretary-General, who visited Haiti after the earthquake occurred on 12 January 2010, made the recommendation to the UN Security Council for an additional 2,000 troops and 1,500 police officers to reinforce MINUSTAH. On 19 January, the Security Council unanimously adopted resolution 1908 authorizing the increase in the number of MINUSTAH personnel in order to support urgent restoration, reconstruction, and stabilization in the country. Subsequently, the UN asked member states to dispatch personnel to MINUSTAH. In response to the request from the UN, the Government of Japan established "the International Peace Cooperation Assignments Plan for Haiti," and "the Cabinet Order Concerning International Peace Cooperation Corps for Haiti" at the Cabinet meeting on 5 February 2010 to dispatch a Self-Defense Force Engineering Unit to MINUSTAH. The Unit's assignments include tasks such as removing rubble, repairing roads, and constructing simple facilities. |
