Departure Ceremony for UNMISS Staff Officers (10th deployment)

On June 5, 2018, a departure ceremony for Captain Naoyuki Abo and Captain Asami Tominaga, who will work for UNMISS as Staff Officers, was held at the Cabinet Office with the attendance of State Minister Jiro Akama, Cabinet Office, and Parliamentary Vice-Minister Keitaro Ono, Ministry of Defense. State Minister Akama encouraged them, expressing his hope that the two officers undertake their duties bearing great pride in mind that they are the ones who represent Japan’s contribution to international peace cooperation.

Japan’s International Peace Cooperation

2017 marked the 25th anniversary of Japan’s International Peace Cooperation Act and the 10th anniversary of Japan’s Global Peacebuilding Program. Japan has contributed to international peace cooperation through dispatch of Self Defense Forces/civilians to peacekeeping missions, capacity development of civilian peacebuilders, and financial and technical support to peacekeepers.

Departure Ceremony for UNMISS Staff Officers

On December 1, 2017, a departure ceremony for Major Yoshiaki Kawamoto and Captain Sachio Tan, who will work for UNMISS as Staff Officers, was held at the Cabinet Office with the attendance of State Minister Jiro Akama, Cabinet Office, and Parliamentary Vice-Minister Tatsuo Fukuda, Ministry of Defense. State Minister Akama offered encouragement to them, expressing his hope that the two officers undertake their duties bearing in mind that they are the ones who represent Japan’s personnel contribution in international peace cooperation.

Homecoming Ceremony for UNMISS Staff Officers

On December 22, 2017, a homecoming ceremony was held at the Cabinet Office for Major Daisuke Kuribayashi and Captain Itaru Ogata, who had been dispatched to UNMISS (United Nations Mission in South Sudan) for a year, with the attendance of State Minister Jiro Akama, Cabinet Office, and Parliamentary Vice-Minister Keitaro Ono, Ministry of Defense. State Minister Akama expressed his gratitude to them for carrying out their duties sincerely which contributed to the smooth activities of UNMISS.

 On July 4, the homecoming ceremony was held in the Cabinet Office for Lieutenant Colonel Nobuhiro Narusawa (Database Officer) and Major Kyosuke Moriguchi (Engineering Officer), who had been dispatched to UNMISS from June last year for one-year term of service as Staff Officers, with the attendance of State Minister Hirotaka Ishihara, Cabinet Office, and Parliamentary Vice-Minister Takayuki Kobayashi, Ministry of Defense.  State Minister Ishihara expressed his gratitude to them for completion of their assignments which contributed to the smooth activities of UNMISS.

On December 19, the homecoming ceremony was held in the Cabinet Office for Major Shingo Akeno (Logistics Officer) and Captain Kazuki Mori (Air Operations Officer), who had been dispatched to UNMISS from December last year for one-year term of service as Staff Officers, with the attendance of State Minister Hirotaka Ishihara, Cabinet Office and Parliamentary Vice-Minister Takayuki Kobayashi, Ministry of Defense. State Minister Ishihara expressed his gratitude to them for completion of their assignments which contributed to the smooth activities of UNMISS including Japanese engineering unit.

On November 28, the departure ceremony for Major Kuribayashi and Captain Ogata, who would work with UNMISS as staff officers, was held at the Cabinet Office with the attendance of State Minister Hirotaka Ishihara, Cabinet Office and Parliamentary Vice-Minister Hiroyuki Miyazawa, Ministry of Defense. State Minister Ishihara offered encouragement to them, mentioning that he hopes they would perform their tasks vigilantly and support UNMISS and the SDF Engineering Unit following the previous Staff Officers who completed their tasks well.


Commendation Ceremony (Staff Officers, and Liaison and Coordination Personnel)

On August 30th, Commendations of the Chief of the International Peace Cooperation Headquarters (Prime Minister) were awarded to 3 Staff Officers who had been dispatched to the United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS) and 2 Liaison and Coordination Personnel. The award certificates were handed to the recipients by Mr. Miyajima, Director General of the Secretariat of International Peace Cooperation Headquarters at Cabinet Office.

On June 30, the homecoming ceremony was held in the Cabinet Office for Major Morotomi and Major Maki who were dispatched to UNMISS from June last year for one-year term of service as staff officers, with the attendance of State Minister Matsumoto, Cabinet Office and Parliamentary Vice-Minister Fujimaru, Ministry of Defense. State Minister Matsumoto expressed his gratitude to them for the safe return and completion of their assignments.

On June 8, the departure ceremony for Major Narusawa and Captain Moriguchi, who would work with UNMISS as staff officers, was held at the Cabinet Office with the attendance of State Minister Matsumoto, Cabinet Office and Parliamentary Vice-Minister Fujimaru, Ministry of Defense. State Minister Matsumoto offered encouragement to them, stressing the critical importance of their role in the effort to support the work of UNMISS and the SDF Engineering Unit, and mentioned that he hoped they would perform their tasks vigilantly and fulfill their duties safely.


UNMISS SRSG awards Japanese Engineering Contingent UN Peacekeeping Medals

On May 17th, the UNMISS SRSG(Special Representative of the Secretary-General) awarded Japanese peacekeepers from Japanese Engineering Contingent at Tomping Camp, UNMISS in Juba. Keeping "Jin"(Sharing the feelings of others, empathy arising from a kindheartedness) as their unit principle, the SRSG acknowledged the Japanese contingent's contribution for peace and development of South Sudan.

Visiting Confident Children out of Conflict (CCC) Orphanage

9th SDF engineering unit in South Sudan visited the CCC Orphanage on April 2nd 2016. The unit will continue these activities by obtaining understanding and cooperation of local people through Japanese culture introduction and sports activities in Juba.
